Each winter, dwarf minke whales gather on the northern Ribbon Reefs and do something unusual: they approach people voluntarily and stay.
A small number of permitted liveaboard operators run minke interactions, conducted on snorkel with swimmers holding a surface rope while the whales choose whether to come in. Encounters lasting hours are not unusual, and the whales frequently make repeated close passes.
