Open Water Diver is the foundation certification of recreational diving and the qualification the overwhelming majority of divers hold.

It certifies a diver to plan and conduct dives with a buddy, without professional supervision, within recreational limits — generally around 18 metres and always within no-decompression limits.

Open Water Diver Course: What the depth limit actually means

The commonly cited 18-metre limit is a training limit, not a hard physical boundary. It exists because the course does not cover the gas planning, narcosis awareness and shorter no-decompression limits that deeper diving involves.

Operators generally enforce it, and exceeding it without further training is how newly certified divers most often get into difficulty.

Certification is the beginning of experience, not the end. Buoyancy, air consumption and general comfort improve dramatically with repetition, and most of that improvement happens after the course.
