Technical Dive Centres in Australia

Why 'technical' is not one capability, and how to compare facilities service by service.

Technical facilities require separate evaluation from recreational centres, and the most common mistake divers make is treating "technical" as a single badge that a business either has or does not.

A centre may offer only one part of the technical range. Teaching Advanced Nitrox does not imply blending Trimix. Blending Trimix does not imply supporting your specific rebreather. Selling technical equipment does not imply servicing it.

The only reliable approach is to compare capabilities individually, and to verify each one rather than inferring it from a centre's overall reputation.

Record each capability separately

These are the fields that actually distinguish one technical facility from another. Each is a separate yes or no, and a centre may legitimately have a mix.

Where technical capability clusters in Australia

Technical capability concentrates geographically, and it follows terrain. Sydney, Melbourne and the Geelong region have the densest concentrations because Port Phillip Heads, the Ships' Graveyard and Sydney's offshore sites give divers somewhere worth the training.

Perth is Western Australia's main technical support hub, Adelaide serves the Mount Gambier cave community, and Tasmania and Queensland have smaller but genuine technical markets.

Never assume technical services are available at a remote destination simply because technical diving is physically possible there.

Questions worth asking before committing

The answers to these determine whether a centre can actually support the diving you want to do.

Which agency and to what course level?
Who is the instructor and what is their own qualification and recent experience?
Is helium currently in stock, and how reliable is supply?
Which rebreather units are supported, and is sorb stocked?
Can cylinders be oxygen cleaned and hydro tested in-house?
Is stage and technical equipment hire available in my size?
Which local sites does the centre actually dive at technical depths?
