Scuba World Mooloolaba

Scuba World combines training, retail and local boat diving on the Sunshine Coast, which makes it a more complete proposition than a pure charter operation and a useful base for divers living in or visiting southeast Queensland.

The region's headline dive is the ex-HMAS Brisbane, a purpose-scuttled naval vessel off Mooloolaba that has become one of the best artificial wrecks in the country. Alongside it, the local rocky reefs provide varied diving that is noticeably better in winter when the water clears.

Having retail and training under the same roof as the boat operation matters more than it sounds. A diver who needs a mask that fits, a computer before a trip, or a course scheduled around work has somewhere to go, and the business has an incentive to keep people diving rather than simply to sell trips.

The Sunshine Coast is a genuinely good place to learn. Water is warmer than Sydney and cooler than the tropics, conditions are variable enough to teach something, and there is real diving available immediately after certification — which is the thing most holiday courses cannot offer.

Continuing education is where the local market is strongest: advanced, deep and wreck specialties all have an obvious application at the Brisbane wreck, and Nitrox is worth holding for the repetitive profiles the site encourages.

Establish before committing: whether equipment servicing is done in-house and which brands, cylinder testing availability and turnaround, gas beyond air, boat schedule and which sites are visited on your dates, and the certification and experience requirements for the wreck. Weather affects offshore trips regularly, so cancellation and rescheduling policy is worth understanding up front.

Winter is the Sunshine Coast's better diving season, which catches out visitors who assume summer. Water drops to around twenty degrees and requires a thicker suit, but visibility on the local reefs and the wreck improves substantially once the summer run-off stops.
