Ocean Free & Ocean Freedom

Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom are two vessels operating from Cairns on a deliberately small-group model, which is the whole point of the operation. Where the large reef catamarans carry well over a hundred passengers, these boats carry a fraction of that number.

For divers, passenger numbers matter more than almost any other variable on a reef day trip. Fewer people means less queuing to get in the water, smaller guided groups, more attention from staff, and a reef site that does not have fifty snorkellers above it. Divers who have had a disappointing experience on a large reef boat frequently find the small-vessel format solves the problem entirely.

Ocean Free visits Green Island and a nearby reef, which makes for a shorter transit and a mixed island-and-reef day. Ocean Freedom runs further offshore to outer reef locations. The two products are genuinely different, and choosing between them is the main decision a diver makes when booking.

Both carry certified divers and offer introductory diving for beginners under instructor supervision. Equipment is provided. Because the groups are small, the quality of the guiding tends to be more personal than the large-vessel equivalent, which suits nervous first-timers and photographers alike.

The trade-off is flexibility. A small vessel has fewer departures and fills earlier, so booking ahead matters more than it does with the larger operators. Weather also affects small boats more, and trips are more likely to be rescheduled in marginal conditions — which is arguably a mark in their favour rather than against.

Worth confirming before booking: exact passenger capacity for the vessel you are on, how many dives are included, whether a guide accompanies certified divers in the water or whether they dive independently, and Nitrox availability. As with most Cairns day operators, retail, servicing and cylinder testing are not part of the business.
