Cocos Dive

Cocos Dive is the main operation in the Cocos Keeling Islands, a remote Indian Ocean atoll roughly 2,750 kilometres northwest of Perth and among the most isolated dive destinations under Australian administration.

The atoll offers clear water, reef diving, drop-offs and a large sheltered lagoon, with marine life influenced by both Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific species. Visibility is frequently twenty to forty metres, and the passes between the lagoon and open ocean produce drift diving with substantial fish activity.

What defines the destination is how few people are there. Sites are uncrowded in a way that is increasingly rare, and the diving has a genuinely expeditionary quality without requiring an expedition budget.

The isolation is also the constraint. Flights route via Perth and are limited, accommodation is finite, and dive services come from a small number of operators. Planning matters more here than at almost any other Australian destination — arriving without having confirmed equipment and gas arrangements is not recoverable on the ground.

Water is warm year-round at roughly twenty-six to twenty-nine degrees, so exposure protection is minimal, but current on the atoll passes can be significant and drift technique is genuinely relevant.

Worth confirming: rental equipment range and, critically, sizing, since replacements are not available locally; Nitrox availability; certification requirements for the passes and drift sites; how dive packages are structured and whether pre-booking is essential; and flight and accommodation logistics. Dive insurance covering remote evacuation is worth arranging given the distance from medical facilities.

Rental equipment sizing is the single thing most worth confirming before flying to Cocos. There is no alternative supplier, no way to source a replacement, and arriving to find nothing fits is not a recoverable situation at that distance from Perth.

Cocos also suits divers who want genuinely uncrowded diving more than they want facilities. Sites here see a fraction of the traffic that any mainland destination does, and the trade is that everything from spares to medical support is a long way away.
