Cave Divers Association of Australia

CDAA

Not a general training agency — the body that governs cave and sinkhole diving access in Australia.

The CDAA occupies a different position from the other organisations on this page. It is not a general recreational training agency but the body that governs access to Australia's cave and sinkhole sites, principally in South Australia's Lower South East.

It operates a site classification system, and a diver's CDAA category determines which sites they may enter. Membership is generally the mechanism by which access is granted at all.

The system exists because of a history of fatalities in the region during the 1960s and 1970s, and its rules are specific responses to how those incidents occurred.

Why local rules matter

Overseas cave qualifications are recognised by CDAA for equivalence in certain categories, but site access still runs through the CDAA system and landowner permissions.

A diver arriving in Mount Gambier with an international cave certification and no CDAA arrangement will generally not be diving.

  • why local rules exist and what they are responding to

Recreational certification is not cave certification

A standard Open Water, Advanced or Deep certification does not prepare a diver to enter an overhead cave environment, and no amount of recreational experience substitutes for cave training.

This is the single most important point the CDAA system enforces.
