Sunreef Mooloolaba

Sunreef is the operation most closely associated with the ex-HMAS Brisbane, the former guided missile destroyer scuttled off Mooloolaba in 2005 and now one of Australia's most approachable large wreck dives.

The wreck is what brings most divers to the Sunshine Coast. At 133 metres long, sitting upright with the superstructure within comfortable recreational depth and the seabed around 28 metres, it accommodates both experienced recreational divers and those working toward deeper qualifications. Because it was prepared specifically for diving, with access points cut and hazards removed, it is considerably more forgiving than a historic loss.

Covering it properly takes several dives, which is the main argument for staying a few days rather than treating it as a single trip. Marine growth has developed substantially since scuttling, and schooling baitfish, wobbegongs and the occasional grey nurse shark in cooler months make it a genuine marine-life dive as well as a structure one.

Alongside the wreck, the operation runs local reef diving on the Sunshine Coast's rocky reef systems — the Gneerings, Old Woman Island and similar — which provide the region's everyday diving and are noticeably better in winter when visibility improves.

Training runs from entry level through continuing education, and the wreck makes an excellent setting for advanced, deep and wreck specialty training. Nitrox is documented and is genuinely worthwhile here given the repetitive depth profile.

Worth confirming: the frequency of ex-HMAS Brisbane trips versus reef trips on your dates, whether a dive permit is handled by the operator, certification and experience requirements for the wreck, penetration policy, and whether servicing and cylinder testing are available in-house. Sea conditions determine access to the wreck, so building flexibility into a trip is sensible.

For divers working toward wreck and deep specialties, the ex-HMAS Brisbane is close to an ideal training site. It is purpose-prepared, the depth range covers both qualifications, and it is interesting enough that repeating dives on it for training does not feel like a chore.
