Shallow water blackout is the principal risk in freediving, and it happens without warning to fit, experienced people. A conscious diver cannot self-rescue from it.
Direct supervision by a trained buddy, one diver down at a time, is the single most important safety practice in the sport and is the reason formal training matters.
