OceanSense Freediving is a freediving specialist at Airlie Beach, and the first thing worth saying is that freediving is a separate discipline from scuba rather than a cheaper version of it.

Trained freediving is not simply snorkelling deeper. It covers breath-hold physiology, the mammalian dive reflex, relaxation and breathe-up technique, equalisation methods that work without a regulator, efficient finning and duck dives, and — most importantly — buddy protocols for recognising and managing blackout.

That last point is why formal training matters. Shallow water blackout happens without warning, it happens to fit and experienced people, and a diver experiencing it cannot self-rescue. Direct supervision by a trained buddy, one diver down at a time, is the practice that makes the sport safe, and it is the thing casual breath-hold divers most often get wrong.

The Whitsundays are a reasonable place to learn. Warm water removes the thermal stress that makes temperate freediving harder, and the sheltered island bays provide calm conditions for line work and technique.

Several of the country's best-known marine encounters are snorkelling or breath-hold experiences rather than scuba — whale sharks and manta rays at Ningaloo, humpback swims, and the Whyalla cuttlefish aggregation among them. Competent freediving makes all of those substantially better.

Worth establishing: the freediving agency and which course levels are offered, whether pool and confined sessions are included, maximum group sizes, and whether any equipment is provided or whether you need your own long fins and low-volume mask. Divers should also check whether any scuba services are offered, since freediving specialists frequently do not carry scuba fills or servicing.

For scuba divers, a freediving course is also one of the more effective ways to improve underwater. Breath control, relaxation, efficient finning and comfort with equalisation all transfer directly, and divers frequently report noticeably better air consumption afterwards.
