The Whitsundays combine sailing, resort tourism, snorkelling and diving. It is one of Australia's best-known marine destinations, but it is also the region where the gap between a marine tour and a dive operation is widest.
Not every Whitsunday marine-tour operator is a dedicated scuba operation. Many excellent sailing trips include an optional introductory dive rather than a structured diving product.
The diving itself centres on the fringing reefs around the islands and, on longer trips, the outer Great Barrier Reef including Bait Reef and the Hardy Reef area.
