Townsville, Ayr & the SS Yongala
Access to the SS Yongala — arguably Australia's single most significant wreck dive.
The SS Yongala is one of Queensland's most important individual dive attractions, and the reason most divers come to this stretch of coast.
The wreck is around 100 metres long and lies at depths reaching roughly 30 metres. Queensland tourism material treats the site as an advanced diving attraction, and that classification is worth taking seriously.
Marine life around the wreck can be exceptionally dense because the wreck provides substantial structure in an area otherwise away from major reef systems. It functions as an isolated oasis, and the biomass reflects that.
Departures run from both Townsville and Ayr, with Ayr offering a considerably shorter boat trip to the site.

Operators may impose additional experience or supervision requirements, and a dedicated conversation about your recent diving is more useful than quoting a certification level.

The Yongala sits on an otherwise featureless seabed. Every structure-dependent species in the area concentrates on it, which is why divers encounter Queensland groupers, rays, turtles, sea snakes, schooling fish and pelagic species in numbers that a comparable reef dive rarely produces.
