Returning to Diving After a Break
A practical way to rebuild comfort, buoyancy and equipment familiarity before making the destination dive the checkout dive.
A certification does not expire, but comfort and automatic responses fade. The important variables are not only how many months have passed: they include previous experience, the environment you are returning to and whether the equipment has changed.
The safest and most enjoyable return separates skill recovery from the trip's most demanding dive.
Tell the operator when and where you last dived, your approximate total dives, the equipment you used and what the planned destination changes. A two-year break after hundreds of local dives is different from a six-month break after certification.
Re-establish mask control, regulator recovery, buoyancy, trim, gas checks and an unhurried ascent somewhere that leaves attention available. A structured refresher is appropriate when confidence or recall is uncertain.

Do not combine the return with a first drysuit dive, unfamiliar camera, strong current and a deeper wreck. Rebuild the ordinary skills first, then add the equipment or environmental change with supervision.
Select a centre that asks about recency and offers an appropriate checkout rather than treating the certification card as the whole assessment. The objective is not to prove that you remember; it is to restore spare attention.

Does scuba certification expire?
Recreational certifications generally do not expire, but operators can require a refresher or checkout based on recency, experience and site conditions.
How long a break requires a refresher?
There is no useful universal number. Consider prior experience, confidence, equipment changes and the difficulty of the planned dive, then discuss them honestly with the operator.
Can the first dive of a holiday be the refresher?
It can be when the site and supervision are deliberately chosen for that purpose. Do not use the priority deep, current-exposed or overhead dive as a checkout.
