Fitness to dive is not a paperwork problem. Pressure, immersion, exertion, cold and breathing resistance can turn a manageable condition on land into a different risk underwater.

Australian course and operator requirements vary with the activity, questionnaire answers and applicable standards. This guide helps you prepare the right information; it does not replace advice from a doctor trained in diving medicine.

Start with honest disclosure

Read the current medical questionnaire in full and answer it literally. Asthma, heart or lung conditions, seizures, diabetes, pregnancy, recent surgery and some medications can require individual assessment rather than an automatic refusal.

  • bring an accurate medication list
  • describe recent symptoms and exercise tolerance
  • include previous diving incidents
  • mention changes since the last medical

Use an appropriately informed doctor

A diving medical considers pressure and immersion, not only general fitness. Ask the course or operator which standard and form they accept before booking an appointment.

  • take the operator's form
  • explain the planned depth and conditions
  • ask for restrictions to be written clearly
  • keep a copy while travelling

Fitness changes from day to day

A valid form does not make someone fit on every morning. Illness, dehydration, fatigue, alcohol, seasickness medication and respiratory symptoms can all change the decision. Divers and operators should be able to call a dive without social pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a dive medical to learn in Australia?

Requirements depend on the course, questionnaire answers, age and provider. Ask for the current form before paying and confirm whether a doctor with diving-medicine knowledge is required.

Can a dive centre clear a medical condition?

No. Staff can explain their requirements, but medical clearance belongs with an appropriately qualified health professional.

Should I disclose medication?

Yes. Medication and the underlying condition can both matter underwater. Discuss them with the assessing doctor and operator.
