Aquability

Aquability is associated with technical diving training in Victoria, serving divers moving beyond the recreational limits that Port Phillip's terrain makes it natural to exceed.

Technical diving is not recreational scuba at greater depth. A dive becomes technical because it involves mandatory decompression, an overhead environment, gas switching, helium, increased redundancy, a rebreather or significant penetration — and depth alone is not the defining factor. A twenty-five metre cave can be more technically demanding than an open-water thirty-five metre reef dive, because the cave removes the option of direct ascent.

Victoria provides the terrain that justifies the training. The walls at Port Phillip Heads run from recreational depth to beyond ninety metres. The Ships' Graveyard holds wrecks across a range that includes profiles requiring Trimix and full decompression planning. The SS Nord in Tasmania and the Mount Gambier cave systems are within reach for divers prepared to travel.

The progression is reasonably consistent regardless of agency: experienced recreational diver, Nitrox, buoyancy and propulsion refinement, twinset or sidemount configuration, Intro to Tech, Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, extended range, Trimix.

What changes at each step is the emergency model. Once a diver has a decompression obligation, ending the dive and surfacing is no longer available as the answer to every problem, and redundancy in gas, buoyancy and instrumentation stops being optional.

Worth establishing before committing: the technical agency and course levels offered; the instructor's own qualifications and recent diving; gas support, specifically oxygen, helium and Trimix availability; whether technical equipment — twinsets, stage cylinders, sidemount harnesses — is available for hire; and CCR support including which units.

The intermediate steps in a technical progression are the ones most often skipped and the ones that matter most. Buoyancy and propulsion work, and time in a twinset or sidemount configuration before starting decompression training, produce a considerably better diver than rushing to the qualification.
