Ocean Divers

Ocean Divers covers recreational and technical training with access to Port Phillip diving, including the HMAS Canberra and the walls at the Heads — the sites that define Victorian diving.

HMAS Canberra is Victoria's signature wreck. The former guided missile frigate was scuttled off Ocean Grove in 2009 and sits at approximately twenty-eight metres. Visit Victoria's own guidance is instructive: divers need an industry-recognised entry-level qualification and experience appropriate for the dive. That second requirement is the one people overlook.

A certification card identifies training completed. It does not demonstrate recent experience in cold water at twenty-eight metres with reduced visibility, current and the task loading that a thick suit adds. At 138 metres long the wreck cannot be covered in one dive, which is part of its appeal — divers return repeatedly and see different sections.

Port Phillip Heads is the other major destination, and it is entirely tide-governed. Most Heads diving happens in a limited slack-water window that shifts daily, and operators who insist on that scheduling are demonstrating competence rather than inflexibility.

Technical training is documented, which fits the terrain — the walls run from twelve metres to beyond ninety, giving divers somewhere genuine to apply decompression and Trimix training.

Worth confirming: the boat schedule and which sites are run on your dates, since Heads trips are tide-dependent; certification and experience requirements for HMAS Canberra; penetration policy on the wreck; Nitrox and whether Trimix is available; the technical agency and course levels; and drysuit hire availability and sizing.

Heads diving is entirely governed by the tide, and the slack-water window shifts daily. Visiting divers should expect the schedule to be set by the ocean rather than by preference, and treat an operator who insists on that as competent rather than inflexible.

HMAS Canberra is also a good illustration of why experience matters more than certification. At twenty-eight metres in cold water with reduced visibility, a diver with twenty warm-water dives and one with two hundred cold-water dives are in genuinely different situations.
