Heron Island Resort

Heron Island is a coral cay on the southern Great Barrier Reef with a resort, a long-established marine research station, and dive sites a few minutes from the jetty. It has been a diving destination for decades and its reputation is well earned.

The Heron Bommie is the site most people come for — a coral pinnacle a short boat ride from the island that was reportedly a favourite of Jacques Cousteau and remains one of the best-known individual dive sites on the Great Barrier Reef. Turtles, rays, reef sharks and dense fish life are routine.

What makes the island work as a dive destination is proximity. Sites are minutes away rather than hours, which means three or four dives a day is comfortable rather than exhausting, and the reef flat is accessible for snorkelling directly from the beach at the right tide.

The research station gives the island an unusual character. There is genuine science happening alongside the tourism, and the interpretation available reflects that rather than being marketing.

Access is by boat or helicopter from Gladstone, and both have baggage implications worth checking before packing dive equipment. Being on a small cay means services are finite and anything specialised should be arranged in advance rather than assumed.

Confirm before travelling: the course range available on-island and whether an instructor is in residence during your stay, Nitrox availability, rental equipment range and sizing, which services require advance booking, and the baggage allowance for your transfer. Turtle nesting runs roughly November to March with hatchlings emerging from January, and humpbacks pass between June and October — both are worth timing a trip around if they matter to you.

Heron is one of the few places in Australia where a non-diving partner has genuinely enough to do. Reef walks at low tide, the research station, the bird colonies and turtle nesting in season mean the island works as a holiday rather than only as a dive trip.
