Eaglehawk Dive Centre

Eaglehawk Dive Centre is the principal operation at Eaglehawk Neck, servicing the Tasman Peninsula — the best cold-water diving in Australia and one of the most dramatic underwater landscapes anywhere in the country.

The terrain is the reason. The dolerite columns that form the highest sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere continue underwater, producing sheer walls, sea caves and architecture that has no real equivalent on the Australian mainland.

Cathedral Cave is the headline. It is part of a substantial sea-cave system and its scale is the attraction — the chamber is large enough that divers surface inside it. Even where portions are dived recreationally, it is an overhead environment in part, and the honest questions are about the specific route on the specific day: how much overhead, whether natural light stays visible, what the surge is doing, and how experienced the guide is at that site.

The SS Nord adds a different dimension. The 1915 steamer lies at around forty-two metres according to official Tasmanian tourism information, which puts most of the wreck beyond entry-level recreational limits and into deep or technical territory.

Waterfall Bay, Sisters Rocks and the surrounding sites offer walls, sponge gardens and what remains of the giant kelp forests — a habitat that has declined dramatically and is now listed as endangered.

Having accommodation attached matters on a coast where swell determines access. Staying several days turns a weather gamble into a plan.

Worth confirming: certification and experience requirements for the cave and deeper sites; drysuit hire availability and sizing; whether technical gas is available for the SS Nord; Nitrox mixes; and how swell conditions are assessed. Visiting divers should confirm exposure protection arrangements before travelling.

Winter frequently produces Tasmania's best visibility, which is counterintuitive for divers used to associating summer with clear water. The trade is genuinely cold water and short days, but the sponge gardens and walls are at their most impressive.
