Esperance Diving & Fishing provides charter access to the Recherche Archipelago, a scatter of more than a hundred granite islands off one of the most remote and spectacular stretches of Australian coastline.

The water here can be extraordinary. Clarity frequently exceeds anything on the west coast proper, and the granite terrain — boulder fields, gutters, walls — combined with Australian sea lion colonies produces diving unlike anywhere else in the state.

Australian sea lions are the highlight for most divers. They are endemic, endangered, and genuinely playful: juveniles approach divers, mirror their movements, blow bubbles and loop back repeatedly. The encounter happens on their terms, which is exactly what makes it good, and the technique is simply to stay still and let them investigate.

The constraint is weather. Esperance faces the Southern Ocean at the edge of the Great Australian Bight, and trips are a genuine weather lottery. When conditions align the diving is exceptional; when they do not, boats do not run. Building flexibility into a trip here matters far more than at a sheltered destination.

Water temperature runs roughly fifteen to twenty-one degrees, so a seven millimetre suit with hood is the practical minimum, and local dive services are limited compared with Perth.

Esperance is a genuine weather lottery and should be planned as one. When conditions align the diving is among the best in Australia; when they do not, nothing runs. Divers who allow a week and treat any diving as a bonus have a far better time than those who book two days.
