July is peak season for several of Australia's defining underwater events simultaneously, and the coldest month in the water almost everywhere.
The Whyalla cuttlefish aggregation is at its densest. Minke whale interactions continue on the Ribbon Reefs. Grey nurse shark aggregations are at their strongest on the east coast, and Lady Elliot's mantas are reliable.
Southern diving requires real thermal planning, and winter visibility in Victoria, Tasmania and Jervis Bay is often the best of the year.
